This short course (4 sessions) goes from the basics of existing notes to building chords and writing melodies/harmonies. It is purely practical and applicable knowledge!
Johnny McAdam has a passion for people to understand the basics of harmony and chords. Johnny has been studying, playing, and teaching music for almost a decade in different settings and countries including song writing and practical theory classes. He has toured the UK, Europe, Scandinavia, and USA as bass player for Superhero and recorded albums ranging from country/folk to rock music.
Aims of the course:
To understand how all notes relate to one another, to make you more musically creative and to discover short cuts to knowing music theory. The course’s aim is to make the difficult and confusing parts of music simple and accessible.
What is covered:
- Why some chords work together but others do not
- Why some notes sound good together
- What chords to use in different keys
- Writing catchy chord sequences
- How to write melody lines
- The secrets behind solos
- Writing harmonies
What to expect:
Nuts & Bolts focuses on the ins and outs of the music rather than how to write lyrics (for this see Song Writing workshop). It is taught through a mixture of examples, listening and experimenting. Participants do not need to play a musical instrument to take advantage of Nut & Bolts – during the course there no instruments used, it is taught in a classroom style.
All material is designed to make you better on your instrument or voice and a more confident player. Best taught over 5 weeks of one session per week.
